Water Filtration

Water Filtration Do We Need It ?

Water filtration has become a necessity as we have become more aware of the importance of chemical free drinking water. Whether your water supply is collected from a dusty roof, or you rely on treated City water – contaminated with Chlorine, the need for filtration is the same.

What ever the source of our water. We all would benefit from some form of water filtration to improve the quality and taste of our water supply.

If you’re relying on town water then any unpleasant taste or odour you notice often stems from chemicals used in the water treatment process, the most common being chlorine.

If your on tank water and the water smells or is discoloured then your problem is most likely biological matter such as leaves, algae or animal waste from rats, possums, birds etc, as well, your may contain impurities from zinc coated roofing iron, aged peeling  paint or lead-head fixings and lead flashing’s on older roofs.

All these issues can be reduced with a properly maintained whole house filtration system.

Is Chlorine a Health Hazard ?

In the past adding Chlorine to a community water supplies has been relatively simple but crucial step in eradicating water-borne diseases, such as Cholera and Typhoid. Before chlorination, many cities around the world reported death tolls of 1 in 1000 people from Typhoid fever alone.

Chlorine has been used as a disinfectant for community based water for more than 80 years with obvious positive effects on public health. Though in the early 70’s it was discovered that chlorine added to water forms Trihalomethanes these chlorinated by-products are now considered harmful.

An American study has shown a 15% to 35% increase in certain cancers for people who rely on chlorinated water. Interestingly this study concluded many of these negative effects were due to showering in chlorinated water… indicating the health risks extend past just drinking chlorinated water – the demand for chlorine filters is very high they are proving more popular than filters for tank water or any other untreated water supply.

The National Cancer Institute estimates the risk of cancer for people who use chlorinated water is up to 93% higher than those who don’t. The negative effects of chlorinated water have been actively debated for many years. Most experts agree there are significant risks from chlorine and chlorinated by-products in drinking water.

The key is effective removal of chlorine using carbon block filters, after it has treated the water.

Is Rain Water Safe ?

Rain water collected from your roof has long been a favoured source of household water, especially in rural areas, and for most of this time it was considered the healthy natural option, thanks in part to New Zealand’s pollution free rainfall.

Problems can occur in the collection, transferring and storage of your tank water. Any fecal matter entering the tank water (from bird or possum, rats etc.) has e-coli present, these can multiply rapidly and cause severe medical conditions, Giardia and Cryptosporidium also enter your tank water this way.

Ceramic filters or Ultra Violet sterilization are the most effective methods for treating tank water that is carrying bacteria, viruses or e-coli.

VOC’s or Volatile Organic Chemicals…

Volatile Organic Chemicals are synthetic compounds that turn into vapor at relatively low temperatures. Most synthetic chemicals found in water, such as pesticides and herbicides, are VOCs.

Volatile organic compounds come with a variety of harmful health effects.

VOCs have been known to cause central nervous system depression (drowsiness, stupor). All VOC’s are a skin irritant as well as irritate the mucous membranes when inhaled.

Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters are typically used to reduce VOC levels in home drinking water
